PS3 - HDMI Against Component, Resolutions and Confusion

by beck ~ April 5th, 2007. Filed under: next generation, playstation 3, ps3, sony, video games, videogames.

Lets start off by noting that I initially purchased the HDMI cable for outputting high definition on the PS3. My HDMI connection has been one of woes and pains from the start. The PS3 has an issue when using HDMI on some sets. I do not know the full technical details but it is all to do with HDCP copy protection and the timeout set for the TV to switch sources. Some TVs have a big problem with the PS3 and HDMI handshaking with it. It simply will not work. Others like myself have the handshaking problem where the TV cannot decide what the cable wants to do so when first starting up a game or movie it gets confused for a few seconds and tries to switch sources in between it may give the screen funny colours or a snowy screen. This is quite worrying when you see it and I am sure its not healthy for the TV in the long term.

Until Sony fix this with a patch, many people will have HDMI issues. Cue the component cable. If your TV has component sockets I would advise this is the best option for those with HDMI issues. Now a word of warning first. If you had been using HDMI then you switch to component, initially you will get NO picture whatsoever on the PS3 - it will switch on, but nobody is home. What you must do after switching cables is for the first time you switch the machine on you must hold the power button on for about 5 seconds until you hear the first beep. This will start the PS3 in display setup mode. Choose 576p or whatever it offers, then go into the display settings and add the resolutions you need - possibly 720p and 1080i. Then choose the audio connection you require. The component connection does not having this handshaking problem and switches easily to the desired resolution when a game or movie is inserted. This eases the pressure on the TV getting confused to what it needs.

It all sounds a bit messy and confusing, but once you have set it up everything is fine. This obviously does not affect those who either do not have a high definition TV or those that have the bigger 1080p televisions.

I feel alot happier now I have abandoned HDMI and gone to component. Not only is my TV happier but I actually think the game is a little smoother over component. Sony needs to fix the HDMI issues before I will consider going back to it and to be honest there is little difference between the two anyway. HDMI might be digital but as far as I am concerned it has little impact on the quality of the games graphics and sound.

UPDATE - I am now back using HDMI.  The best way to stop the handshake flicker is to go into the PS3 display settings and remove the tick from 1080i so you have only the basic resolution and 720p.  This tells the PS3 that both dashboard and games are in 720p and there is no need for it to keep switching.  This is of course assuming your television supports 720p.

Perfect timing on the comment by Beck. Since buying a PS3 two months ago I am on my third replacement machine from Sony. The problem? When using HDMI my DVD’s all play with a green tint. The funny thing is, when I got the first unit and hooked it up with HDMI the DVD’s played fine. The problem started when I had to upgrade my firmware in order to use a Bluetooth remote. Once I upgraded from ver 1.1 to 1.3 I’ve had the green tint problem. The latest unit runs ver 1.6 and still has the problem. I guess I’ll have to try going to component video cable as suggested.

  3. beck

Thats a weird problem Larry. To me, a green tint usually means an RGB problem I think.

The only thing I can think of is to reset your display settings by switching on but holding down the on button until it beeps. Then choose the resolutions you need - 1080i and 720p probably. That might kick the display back to normal.

Other than that, do try the component.

  4. Larry

Didn’t try the reset of the resolution (although I think it was already set properly). I went with component video cable from the PS3 to the receiver and then HDMI from the receiver to the TV and that worked.

  5. Mosh

I had the green tinit issue on one of the PS3s I brought back from the US and the resolution reset trick fixed it too.

On the HDMI side, I’ve been using HDMI to DVI-D into my Dell 1920×1200 LCD and it’s been working very well :-)

  6. beck

I think I will leave hdmi until Sony issue a fix - thats if they can issue a fix. Some people say they can, others say its down to the TVs. So I will wait.
Also seeing as HDCP is not being implemented at the moment, there is no need for hdmi anyway.

  7. Dave

Having the same problem using hdmi cables. I just get a blank screen even though my relysis plasma recognises an input of 576p at 50Hz. Have tried the holding down of power swicth but get nothing. Might have to keep to components. Does anyone else experience a blank screen?

  8. beck

Hi Dave, have you gone into the display settings and ticked the options for 720p and 1080i ??

Blank screen can be a symptom of a serious hdmi handshaking problem though

  9. Dave

Yeah tried everything. Can only change display settings on the component cables and have ticked everthing upto 1080i which works great with the components but as soon as I plug in the HDMI To DVI Cable I just get 576p 50Hz shown and no picture. If it is a handshaking problem is there a fix or would it have to be a new tv?

  10. beck

Well if a fix is possible, then Sony might make one but whether they do or not is another matter.

You do not have to use HDMI. Its not a requirement and there is barely any difference between that and component over picture quality anyway. So you are probably just better off using component. :)

  11. Dave

Thanks. Can u suggest any decent component cables as the ones I have are quite cheap and sometimes get a little distortion in picture quality usually a couple of faint wavy lines towards the bottom of the screen appear mostly on blu ray

  12. beck

I guess the most suitable cable would be the one made by Sony themselves. You should be able to find it in most game shops.

Just thinking about it, you said you were using HDMI to DVI - is that using a converter? Maybe your converter is faulty or something?

  13. Dave

No my cable had an hdmi one end and dvi the other. I bought two cables each a different make and both had the same problem.

  14. beck

Well I don’t know what else to suggest other than trying a component.
Are you in the UK? You could borrow mine as a test if you like.

  15. Steve

I just stumbled on this thread by accident while trying to find what resolutions were supported via component on the PS3, but someone asked for recommendations on component cables so I thought I’d suggest looking up Blue Jeans Cable online. They have a great selection of extremely well constructed cables at prices that are considerably less than what you’d pay for Monster or some other marketing-focused A/V firm.

BTW, Monster makes great cables. I have no quarrel with their product, its just that you will pay a premium to have that name so if you’re looking for similar (and actually considerably better when compared to Monster’s main-line), I’d say go with a company like Blue Jeans. They also have ridiculously inexpensive HDMI cables. I use component, HDMI and speaker cables from them in a very high-end system and I’m pleased with all results.

I also was going to ask the individual who was having the green tint issue whether or not he/she has individual picture adjustment memories for different inputs. If your display has a “pro” or “ISF” mode, you can sometimes adjust RGB (or even yellow, cyan and magenta if you’re lucky) and you may be able to correct that green cast.

If you really want to be finicky, I’d highly reccomend getting a copy of the Avia home theater callibration DVD. It comes with a few light filters that you can use to adjust colors without having to “eyeball” the balance. It also has some great audio features.

Anyway, just thought I’d pass on that info. I’ll probably never be back this way, but good luck to you all.

    -Steve

  16. beck

Hello Steve, thanks for popping by.

I have considered Monster cables in the past but at nearly £50 a go I think they are very expensive just for a cable. I did look into their quality versus other cables and the general consensus from what I found was that the difference is minimal.

I certainly don’t think they would make any difference to the handshaking issues. Its an expensive mistake to make if there is no improvement.

I would like to go back to hdmi sometime in the future though.

  17. Chris

I’m having an issue with HDMI and my TV as well. My problem is when the PS3 is turned off…I’ll get static coming out of the speakers, which can’t be good. I have to turn the TV on and off to get rid of it. This seems to happen when the PS3 has been on for a long time. If I have the TV on a different channel, and then turn off the PS3, I have no issues. I’m thinking about switching over to component, plus my TV maxes out at 1080i, so I shouldn’t see a difference.

  18. beck

Hmm Chris that does not sound too healthy. Maybe you have a faulty cable, or a faulty hdmi socket on the TV.
Does it happen when the PS3 is powered right off out of standby with the rocker switch at the back?

For what its worth, the difference between hdmi and component is so small that many would not be able to see it anyway. I certainly cannot.

  19. Nash

    Hi
It’s inetersting seeing all you guys with problems with your PS3’s and HDMI set up. I also have a problem but again it seems slighlty different to everyone else…I’ve just bought a 40″ Samsung F70 model and hooked up the PS3 via my HDMI cable. On the PS3’s XMB front menue I experience a weird snowy picture (although still really sharpy) and absolutely NO sound. However the strange thing is that once I put a game in or DVD the sound and picture are both perfect as if nothing is wrong. But once I take the disk out I’m back to the same snowy picture and no sound. Interstingly I tried a Blueray movie disk and that too had no sound, although the picture was fine! Any ideas?!…

  20. becky

Hi Nash, the only thing I can think of is to make sure in the display settings that the ps3 knows you are using HDMI and also check the sound aswell

  21. Nash

    Thanks Becky
It’s weird i’ve gone over every option on the set and the PS3 several times over but still no joy!
I’m guessing it’s probably something really obvious i’m overlooking but it’s sooo frustrating!
I’ll take your advice and test it out!

  22. Iain sf1875

I bought a generic hdmi lead on ebay and tried it briefly last sat with the ps3 - got sound but no pictures, didn’t try mucking about with settings or anything because of the time etc but am now being told that it has to be certain type of hdmi for the ps3, conflicting information. Connecting to samsung smle32lcdtv hd.

    any thoughts?

  23. David44

    Hi,

I just bought my hdmi cable on ebay as well and i get that blue screen after switching the connection to HDMI on my PS3. I have a 32″ VIZIO (VIZIO VX32LHDTV10A). I currently have it connected using component cables which i have been happy with but now with the new DVD Movie HD Upscaling feature in the latest PS3 software update, I need to get this HDMI issue resolved. HELP!!

  24. beck

HI David, whats happening with your DVDs now with the upscaling since the update?

Have you checked the new settings? I was browsing the dashboard the other day and there seems to be new settings for the upscaling. Have you checked those?

I must admit I have not checked a normal DVD since the update but I will have a look later for you and see if I can find anything.

  25. BRIAN JOHNSTONE

Hi i also have ps3 hdmi issues and also seem to be diffrent to the 1,s already here mine is when using the hdmi cable linked to my LG 50″ PX4D everthing is fine then after about 5/10 min the sound distortes and becomes very crackly and when you come out of the game/dvd ect back to the menu
the menu sound jumps in and out
resating tv/ps3 gets ride but just comes back aftert 5/10 min.
i have reveted back to the component cable for now.

  26. sd99

If I had problems like that, I’d take the PS3 back to the store…

  27. beck

    Hi Brian,

I think your problem might be a faulty cable. If it was the PS3 at fault you would most likely get the problem with component aswell.

I would advise you try another hdmi cable.

  28. BRIAN JOHNSTONE

HI THANKS FOT THE COMMENTS BECK I WILL TRY THAT ANYSUGGESTION ON WHAT TYPE OF HDMI CABLE TO GO FOT AS THERE IS SUCH A WIDE RANGE FROM AROUND £10 TO £100

  29. beck

HI Brian, I would go for the Sony Official one, unless thats what you are using now.

  30. David

    Hi all,
I’m stuck and have tried most things but getting knowhere fast!

I have tried to link my PS3(HDMI), XBOX 360(COMPONENT) and WII(COMPONENT) to my Sony DA5200ES.

I’m going out of the amp via HDMI to DVI into a Phillips 50″ Plasma running 1080i.

The Wii and the xbox is running fine but for some reason im receiving a picture via HDMI but NO Audio on the PS3, when i go into the set up on the PS3 it says that it will not send audio through HDMI. AND for some reason the amp will not let me select HDMI for picture and optical for audio within the amp menu….

Also when running movies through the PS3 (blueray and normal) there is a juddering line about an inch from the bottom! does not do it on games though!! not sure if it’s the TV or the PS3???

Any Suggestions or tech help would be much appreciated!

  31. Charles

    Hi All

Slightly different problem, but probably related to the resolution / component stuff.

I have a Sony ke-p42mrx1 TV which was top plasma a few years ago, but only supports HD through component (No HDMI)

It runs perfectly with Sky HD through component.

But, with the PS3 … it gets an “Out of Range” error every time the background is quite light. It appears to be changing format at this point although it always reverts back to 1080i 50Hz once the background changes.
This occurs in both games and Blu Ray discs … so for example in the Apocalypto Bu Ray, the scenes in the jungle are fine, but through the ruins with light background it resets multiple times.

Anyone have any ideas how I rectify this? I called Sony who are clueless and the TV does not allow me to force the resolution. Reducing to 720p or 576 does not seem to make a difference either.

    Thanks

  32. beck

Hello Charles, go into the display settings and ensure you have 576p, 720p and 1080i all at the same time.
The PS3 will then decide what to use for itself. It should choose 1080i for blu ray movies and 720p for games. It will switch between the two depending on what you are doing. Oh and the dashboard plays at 1080i aswell.

  33. Charles

I’ve done that abd tried deselecting 1080i, then 720p etc..
Problem is that is seems to send something that generates the “out of range” error on TV. I’d think it’s the TV doing it … but in 6 months I’ve not seen it once on Sky HD and I probably see it 20-30 times over the course of a single Blu Ray disc.
Also strange that it only seems to appear when the background is very light

  34. beck

HI Charles, not sure I can help you there, it seems out of my remit of knowledge (which is very little in the first place) :)
Does your TV have to sets of component sockets? How are you managing to connect sky hd and ps3 at same time?

  35. Charles

I have a component switch (joytech) that I normally use, but I’ve eliminated that as the problem by physically disconnecting and connecting the PS3 /Sky. In addition, it works fine with SKy through the switch as well.

    Regards
    Charles

  36. beck

Have you eliminated a cable problem by using another cable?

  37. Charles

No not tried that as it’s another cable to purchase, but might give that a whirl on the weekend. I’ve been using the genuine Sony cable rather than a cheaper alternative

  38. beck

Charles if you are in the UK I might have a cable you could borrow.

  39. Charles

Thanks for the offer. I actually ordered a new one this morning so hopefully that works

  40. John

I have a question regarding sound on my PS3. My picture works fine with my Sharp Aquos LCD television. I updated the PS3 last week and now the sound doesn’t work. I’ve reset the machine, tried a new HDMI cable etc. and nothing seems to work. Any ideas out there? Thanks in advance.

  41. beck

Hey John, have you checked the sound settings in the PS3 and ensured the sound is going through the appropriate channel? Like if you use only HDMI for sound, make sure its set to that as the output.
erm.. thats the only thing I can think of unless the update somehow broke your sound, but I can’t see that happening tbh. Might be worth a call to Tech Support of Sony to see if there is anything they can suggest. I have not had experience with them though, so have no idea whether they are any good or not.
If it is firmware that has literally broken it, then resetting the machine won’t help as you cannot rollback a firmware.

If you are in the UK it will still be under warranty anyway so if there is a fault take it back to the store for a replacement. But check the obvious first. If your TV has different sound settings for each connection type, check the sound on the TV to make sure they are all okay first and also try the other HDMI socket if you are lucky enough to have two.

  42. Richard

Just wanted to say thanks for all your input… been listening to PS3 sounds with no picture on my PS3 for hours wondering what was going on!

I held down the power button on the PS3 and changed the settings - my LGLB1DB now works a treat.

    Thanks.

  43. beck

HI Richard, glad you found the thread useful. The way PS3 deals with audio and sound is very strange. The Xbox 360 adapts to whatever cable you use, but if the settings are not right in the PS3 it can throw all sorts of problems including getting no picture at all.
Sony could have made it a bit more user friendly.

  44. hans

My problem appeared overnight - got a Sony HDMI cable when I got the PS3 and it has worked beautifully from Day 1, but then, suddenly, HDMI gives blank output. I think it appeared not long after upgrading to 1.8. At startup the PS3 suggest to use HDMI because it senses its availability, but output is blank.

  45. beck

Hello Hans, Have you tried like others have tried and reset the display settings?

From standby, hold down power button for about 5 seconds until it does second bleep. Then go into display settings and set them again.

  46. Magnus

I have the same problem like some of you guys in here. I get perfect picture with my hdmi but the sound breaks up when i play games (if i pause the game the sound comes back again but only as long as the game is paused). Tried 2 different hdmi cables, using sonys original right now. Where thinking about sending my tv in for repair but after reading all the posts here and on other pages, i guess im far from the only one with these problems.

Funny thing is my mother have the exact same tv as i do and it works perfect there….go figure.

  47. Magnus

…another thing i just noticed is that if i set the display down to 576p then the sound works again. What does this meen? Man i just want it to be simple like it used to be. Plug the cable in and voila it works.

  48. beck

Hello Magnus, that sure is a weird problem you have. I would have thought if the sound works fine on your mothers TV then it must be your TV, but then that would not necessarily be so.
Have you gone into the audio settings of the PS3 and determined you have it set to HDMI?
Chances of it being a cable problem is very low as you have tried two cables, so I would rule that one out. It could be a faulty HDMI socket on the TV that can be determined by your TV manufacturer. Are you still in warranty for your TV?

What you could do, if your Mum is willing and she does not use the HDMI, is to swap TV’s with her. That would enable you to enjoy your games. But of course that does not fix the problem in the long run.

In the first case you can phone Sony support and see if they know of a fix, explain you have tried several different cables. Don’t tell them about your Mums TV working as they will blame the TV without hearing further.

Have you considered connecting via component cable? HDMI is no better than that anyway, so if you have a spare component socket that could be something to try.

  49. Ben01008900

    Hi Guys

My problem seems to be the wrong way round?

I got past the black screen through HDMI cable at an output of 1080i which was a result i thought however i now have no audio, i have tried all of the manual settings and none of them seem to work?

I have already tried all of the ideas so far on this page!

    Can anyone help?

Where have the days gone where you could just plug it in and play?

Please, please help i am playing in AV

  50. beck

Hello Ben, Have you ensured that the audio output is set to use HDMI cable?

Also have you tried 720p instead of 1080i?

  51. Carl

Again another similar but different problem with HDMI PS3. I got a HDMI cable the week after my PS3, HDMI has run fine with games/blu-rays with no problems since i changed over from the standard sony issued cable in the package. However i went on holiday this week, (my missus insists all electrical goods are turned of at sockets when we are away) and on my return i get a flashing pixelated screen through HDMI. I have tried the hold-down reset, checked for upgrades, checked settings on TV and PS3 and cannot find anything wrong, i have even had the PS3 reset to initial settings with no result. Anyone know what has happened in my absence, is it something to do with it being powered down for a week? I used the PS3 minutes before we left, it was fine and nothing was touched or altered until i found the problem today. Please help, its doing my nut in. thanks,

  52. beck

Ooh that is a new problem Carl. Powering it down for a week should not affect it like that. I really think you ought to call Sony on this one, its out of my knowledge.

Have you tried unpluggoing from mains, unplugging cable, then put them back in again? I occasionally have to do this to get rid of static flickering with my cable.

  53. ben01008900

    Beck

For some reason it has decided to work at 1080i but before it was not the visual but the audio???

    Anyway its working now

    Thanks for the help anyway

  54. Carl

Beck, Phoned Sony, they sent replacement PS3 day after, also got new HDMI cable. No change, until today when i tried again and eventually the screen has gone completely, through HDMI(’NO SIGNAL’).
Must be the TV. 13 months old (typical) will now see what i can do with Samsung. Thanks anyway.

  55. beck

Hi Carl, I am sorry I am not able to help further.

Has your TV got any other ports you can try? Component works just as well if you have those. I would imagine if your TV is only 13 months old it would have component.

Even if it is just out of warranty you still have grounds for a replacement or free repair, it just requires a little fighting. Under the sale of goods act a TV is expected to last a reasonable amount of time - 13 months is not reasonable. If you have no luck with Samsung or the place you purchased it from, then get in touch with your local trading standards department.

Happy to hear Sony sent a replacement very quickly though.

  56. Andy

Well i have a Sammy 26 R74bdx and have used this tv with both my 360 and ps3 since launch day(s) with no problems.

However, since the latest update of the 1.9 firmware to the ps3 it no longer accepts a video signal via HDMI OR the AV cable bundled with the unit.

I cannot turn the system via the joypad either via the usb cable or wireless.

I have read all of the previous posts and i am willing to try via component cable but seeing as it doesn’t even recognise the ps3 then maybe i am going down a blind alley??

The 360 continues to work fine via component, and the ports on my sammy that usually take a normal av signal (3 phonos) work fine but NOT with the ps3.

Any ideas anybody?? - bear in mind the controller won’t sync with the console - 4 flashing lights.

Is it time to ring Sony considering the amount of buck passing that has been going on?

  57. beck

HI Andy, have you tried resetting the display settings?

From Standby - Press and hold the on switch for about 5 seconds until it double beeps. This should start up the PS3 in basic display mode where you should be able to enter your display settings again

  58. Andy

Hi Beck, as previously mentioned i have read all of the posts and tried the ’soft reset’ trick to no avail many many times (read comment below)

Funny thing though i did sometimes get the ps3 to dislpay the boot screen (via standard av) on the odd occasion in a weird resolution but before i could change anything the system locked up.

    Do you think it’s f**ked?

  59. beck

Okay one last thing to try and that is a full system reset, this will restore your machine to factory defaults although it does not roll back the firmware. It will however format the console and you will lose ALL data, which is not a priority anyway considering you can even switch it on at the moment.

Hard Reset Procedure for the PS3 (as instructed by Sony CS)

This should also be a last resort procedure, just before you return it to sony.

some symptoms this has fixed include:
    - freezing when doing anythin
    - no harddrive activity
    - freezing when trying to use onboard keyboard or bringing up keyboard
    - game/movie disc freezes system

Be sure to backup you settings/game saves by doing a system>backup on you PS3 or you will lose your game saves.

    1. Power off the PS3 using the power switch in the back.. and power back on w/ switch.

    2. Hold power button on the front until you hear 3 beeps.

    3. Go through the initial setup, and then run a full Format via System>format (This will take about 3 & 1/2 hours) note: if you are using HDMI, you may want to switch to AV here, b/c HDMI isn’t detected after the initial reset.

    4. Restore your system backup that you made earlier. (optional)

    Taken from http://ps3-network.com/index.php?showtopic=79&view=getnewpost

Chances are this will not work because you cannot get into the system, but it is worth a go.
Let me know please how you get on :)

  60. Andy

Hi Beck, Tried that but on the 3rd beep the console just shuts down again. 1st beep (power up), 2nd beep (av reset), 3rd beep (shut down - red light).

    The controller still doesn’t sync.
What i will do is test with a component cable i will receive tomorrow.
If no joy with that then the console must be knackered and i will have to ring Sony.
I know the component input on my Sammy is ok because my 360 is currently using it.
Mind you saying that, both scart inputs are fine too, apart from when i plug the sony av cable into one of them.

Do you want me to update you further?

  61. Andy

Beck, going to ring Sony up tomorrow and demand a new console.
Tried it on another TV and it’s still the same. Guess the video chip has screwed up or something.

    Andy.

  62. beck

Sorry I couldn’t help any more Andy. Make sure you remember to explain to them it happened after 1.9 firmware update.

I assume you are in the UK and it is still under warranty? If you purchased it from a high street store it would be quicker to take it in with your receipt and just get an exchange.

Let me know how it goes either way. I hear Sony are very quick with replacements anyway.

  63. Andy

Yes, i am in the UK (manchester).
I indeed will tell them this is probably an issue with the latest firmware updates (from 1.8 onwards from what i can gather).

Unfortunately, i purchased online but from a reputable UK seller (www.gameplay.co.uk), but obviously i choose to go the direct route.

Don’t be sorry with regards your advice - it has been most helpful thanks.

PS - you can email me directly at: *spamtrapped*

    Cheers buddy.

  64. beck

Yeah gameplay.co.uk are very good and will replace without question, but it may be quicker to get Sony to replace it. I read on a forum the other day someone got a replacement within 2 days.

  65. Jas

I bought a PS3 recently and used it with my normal TV using the supplied composite cable. It worked fine.

Then I moved it to the cinema room, with HD 1080p projector. This takes a component connection, but has no composite input or HDMI (it’s 3 years old).

I bought a Sony original component lead.

However, the projector is not detecting any signal at all. (It works fine with the XBOX 360 in HD).

Has anyone any idea how to get it working?

  66. beck

    HI Jas,

When you change connections on the PS3 you need to reset the display settings. From standby, press and hold the on switch for about 5 seconds till it does a multiple beep and let go. It should start up on basic mode where you can then select component.

    Have you done this bit?

  67. Andy

If that doesn’t work then don’t bother looking for a workaround. Ring Sony (as i did) and you’ll get a replacement ps3. I personally won’t change cables again since i had an issue with the HDMI input (like thousands of others).

Sony have definitely got an issue with with the ps3 but will not admit to it!

  68. beck

Yeah I think there is a display issue but I don’t think it’s a widespread issue at least not like the 360 problems.
I certainly have not heard of many people having to return PS3’s for replacements.

I also think its not just the PS3s fault. I think some of this has to do with HDMI and how different televisions handle them. Some handle it better than others. Its a very new technology and I just don’t think the TV manufacturers have got it right yet.

  69. Jas

Hi beck, yes I tried that and still no luck :(

Andy, I called Sony and they said I should buy another lead and try that. I will do that.

I can’t return it as I bought it second hand, and it’s an imported US PS3 (I’m in the UK). (I wanted a US machine to play Region A movies.)

  70. beck

Ah bummer. The very reason I never buy import.

Well as far as I know, Sony will still fix it, but they will charge. Not sure on the price but after trying a second cable its worth speaking to them about it.

Also worth speaking to your TV manufacturer maybe?

  71. Jas

Thanks guys for trying to help :)

It turns out it was not the cable. I found the solution by trial and error.

It seems the PS3 will not auto detect to output a component signal. I auto detected a composite connection to my old TV, and manually set it to output component 480i NTSC - despite having a composite connection. I saved and shut down. Then connected by component to the HD projector.

It worked :) I could see the image finally, and simply entered the settings to enable all resolutions up to 1080p.

It has since worked perfectly :)

  72. beck

No unfortunately it does not auto detect which is why I recommended you did the display reset. Not sure why that didn’t work though.

Anyway at least you got it sorted now, well done :-)

  73. Shai

    Hello everyone.
I just got my new PS3, and I’m having an irritating problem.

I first plugged it in to my friend’s plasma TV which supported HDMI. It ran fine and everything was cool. Then I got back home and I plugged it into my old TV with component cable, turned it on but I couldn’t see/hear anything.

Seems like it’s locked on HDMI so it doesn’t display any component output.

I’ve tried the 5 second button press but I never even hear a second beep… :x

  74. beck

    Hai Shai :)
Just hold it until you hear a beep, any beep then let go. It should start up.

  75. Shai

Eventually I managed to get it to display component. Phew. What a hassle.

  76. Primal Scientist

    Hi,

Just bought Monster component cables to run from my PS3 into the back of my Denon AVR4306.
Was there all night trying to figure out why my PS3 would not convert from HDMI to Component, serious handshaking problems, going backwards and forwards between my AV Reciever and PS3.
I too have heard about Monster, but after all the problems I am having, I am beginning to wonder. Also, a Monster Optical cable came with my component set, but again, I am having slight problems with my 5.1 system where the front 2 speakers seem to be the only ones working, where as using HDMI, it was multi channel, or is this standard? I did change the settings on my PS3 to optical.
I cannot wait to get home tonight just to try the display reset……..will let you know how I get on anyway.

I am pleased I stumbled across your website.

  77. beck

Hello Scientist, when you setup the audio settings and got to optical, did you continue right and get to the bit where I think it allows you to set the number of channels.

I am confused by what cables you are actually using because you mention both HDMI and component. Are you trying to have HDMI for audio and component for sound?

  78. Primal Scientist

    Hi Beck,

Sorry, I am changing from HDMI to Component due to not having enough HDMI Ports in my AV Reciever. I was using HDMI originally, but now I want to change the use of my HDMI cable for my DVD.
I did check the settings, and did actually tick the 5.1 and 2.1 Channel Boxes.
I want to take the HDMI Cable out of my PS3 and just use the Component Cable.

  79. beck

I see gotcha. Yes in which case you would have to do the display reset thing and then check the options for optical if that is what you wish to use. Good luck :)

  80. Primal Scientist

Thanks, I will let you know how it goes. :)

  81. beck

Just out of interest, why did you buy Monster cables? I am not sure you get much extra buy paying much more. There seem to be mixed reactions about Monster on the web. Many swear by them, many say they are a waste of money.

  82. Primal Scientist

    Sorry for the delay Beck…..
Just on recommendation really. Apparently they have good sheilding, and behind my TV, there is just a sea of cables. I wish I knew what I could do with them…..:x

  83. beck

Ah the old cable problem. The back of my TV looks like the national grid, I hate it. We are all just obsessed with cables nowadays, everywhere you go there is a cable for something.
Wireless electricity? Its fairly new and probably expensive but it is the future if it is proven to be safe.

  84. Primal Scientist

    Yeah, that will be interesting!!
    No more cables!!

  85. Primal Scientist

    Hi,

Well I have tried holding down the on button on the PS3 but unfortunately to no avail. I manage to get the screen resolution 576p, but unfortunately for some reason my machine doesn’t like it.
I just cannot get it to show on component.

    Please help!!

  86. beck

Once you start up in basic mode (576p) you should be able to go into display settings and change it to component. Then when you select component, press right on controller to go to next option which is resolutions, tick the box for 720p and move on to next bit which is audio.

  87. Primal Scientist

    Hi,

I do manage to change to component and then my screen just goes blank!! I must be doing something wrong?? :(

  88. beck

Jas had a similar problem, I shall quote below what he did to fix it…

“It seems the PS3 will not auto detect to output a component signal. I auto detected a composite connection to my old TV, and manually set it to output component 480i NTSC - despite having a composite connection. I saved and shut down. Then connected by component to the HD projector.

It worked :) I could see the image finally, and simply entered the settings to enable all resolutions up to 1080p.”

  89. Primal Scientist

I think I know what you mean here….

I will try again later anyway!!

  90. Primal Scientist

    Well I finally did it!!!

    Yahoo!
I did what you said (the same as Jas), and it worked!!
What a nightmare though to be honest!!

If anyone plans to link their PS3 with and AV Receiver or Projector, best they plan to do some homework first!!

But thanks to this web site, I did it!!

    Thanks Becks!!

    Scientist. :)

  91. beck

Ah we have to thank Jas for that, it was his work that sussed it out, I just did a copy and paste :)

  93. Paul

Hi, cool site btw. Ideal for annoyed new PS3 owners like me.

I have tried all the manual resets etc and when I connect PS3 via HDMI i get absolutely nothing. No sound or picture, just my JVC HD saying HDMI 576i (presuming this is default setting).

Have you experianced anyone who has bought a no-name HDMI cable that hasn’t worked. Could that be the issue, I have a geoteck or something. Also, I understand that some HDMI say support HDMI 1.3. Do you know what version hd the PS3 outputs at? Presuming the official cable will work instead?)

Just to check PS3, I have connected via nasty euro scart and it works. But thats not the point. I cant even tell the PS3 what settings to use if I cant see anything in the 1st Place thru HDMI!

I know I can try component, but the Wii already has the one covered on my TV. The Wii is my primary console and not being moved!

Please explain what handshaking with HDMi TV is also.

    Thanks, Paul.

  94. beck

Hi Paul, Handshaking is when the TV is connecting to the source - like a PS3. It shoudl run smoothly when changing for example from 1080i to 720p but some sets have a handshaking problem where it doesn’t switch smoothly and people get alot of annoying flicker until it settles down. This can be a few seconds like in my case, or in serious cases 30 seconds or more. Its not a PS3 issue as such, more of a TV issue and the way they implement the HDMI.

If you have connected by scart before I assume you are aware that you cannot just change display on the PS3 and expect it to work, you have to do the proper manual reset of holding the power on button for about 5 seconds until it beeps. It should start up in 576p mode and then you should be able to go into the display settings and change them. Note: to reduce a possible handshake problem, set the PS3 to use only 720p and not 1080i aswell, thats how I fixed mine.

Something which appears others have had success with is to connect via scart, go into display settings and set the display to use HDMI and choose 720p resolution, then power off completely, including the rocker switch at the back, then plug in HDMI and power up and see if that works. If you cannot get a picture at all after that then there are 3 possibilities: Your HDMI socket on the TV does not work, the HDMI on the PS3 does not work or the HDMI cable is faulty. If you have a friend with a PS3 you can rule out faulty TV and PS3 one way or another by trying theirs on your TV.

If you have no friend with a PS3 then go first for a new HDMI cable and see if that sorts the problem.

  95. Carl

Hello Beck, Following up from a problem i had in July (last message july 27th).

It was the TV HDMI connection, the TV was from PC World and they have been trying everything they can to get away from repairing it for free. It is ongoing but i will win. Apparently i have to prove to them that it has not been damaged by me constantly plugging the cable in and out. Why would i keep plugging it in and out anyway?

p.s. is component connection really as good as HDMI? What are the differences in picture and sound quality?

  96. Andy

    None.

  97. becky

HI Carl, I have tried both component and HDMI and I cannot see any difference whatsoever in the graphics. However on HDMI the sound on my TV is much lower and I have to turn the sound way up when using it.

  98. Primal Scientist

Getting the setting’s right for the PS3 is a bit of a nightmare, when I was changing from HDMI to Component, I was constantly switching on and off.

The PS3 is not very user friendly here.

I was glad I found this site, the PS3 would have probably been in bits by now otherwise.

  99. becky

HI Primal, I would not have known about holding down the standby button had I not seen it elsewhere.

Its certainly the most non user friendly console ever for setting up connections. At least with the 360 you can actually switch it on if you change cable.

I wonder how many support calls Sony have had regarding this issue, they could have made things easier for themselves and customers by making it seamless.

  100. Primal Scientist

    I agree.

Anyway, looking forward to Halo 3 on Wednesday!!

  101. Paul

    Beck, thanks for the reply.

In the end I gave up and just got the component connectors!

Will get the official HDMI cable and test it with that to see, but can’t find the cable on the high street at the moment so will go online.

If it works I’ll let you know.

    Cheers,

    Paul.

  102. becky

HI Paul, You don’t need the expensive official cable, any HDMI cable will do the job although I would steer clear of a cheapie one for £1 as usually the build quality is crappy.

Have you managed to get a proper picture using component?

  103. Primal Scientist

I bought Monster for about £75 and it works fine.

  104. becky

LOL there is no way I would ever spend £75 on a cable. :)

  105. Primal Scientist

I know, its a lot really.

I mean, that could be 2 games!!!

  106. becky

I bet there is no difference in quality either :)

  107. Primal Scientist

No, although they like to tell you there is…..
Behind my TV there is just so many wires, it looks terrible.

Will you be getting Halo 3 and posting your comments on the site?

  108. becky

I have Halo 3 here and still in its shrink wrap. I am not a great fan of the Halo games, I always felt they were pretty boring and generic but I am willing to give this final installment another go. I am quite intrigued by the Forge level feature although I am sure it will soon end up being an abused feature by others.

  109. Primal Scientist

    BECKY!!!

  110. becky

Well I played a bit of it and my thoughts have not really changed. Its a pretty generic FPS with nothing unique. AKA quite boring. I shall try it online later.

  111. Paul

    Becky,

Got the component running 1080i no probs, but really got PS3 for Blu-ray and upscaling older dvds thru HDMI. I’ve bought a good quality HDMI and i get the same result, the screen resets to 576i but is blank. I know there is a signal as the blue screen tv shows with no signal changes to back lit black.

Its gotta be either the TV HDMI port is faulty or the PS3 HDMI, or just the fact that my TV and PS3 don’t like each other at present. I dunno whether to hold on for a firmware update from Sony or get JVC round to look at my LTD26 TV, thing is it’s 18 months old and warranty has run out. It’s not fair cos I’ve never had a HDMI enabled device to try it thru, and I paid tonnes of money 18 months a go for a TV with HDMI to future proof!!! ARRGGHH!!!

  112. beck

Not sure what to suggest Paul. I would think maybe seeing as the PS3 would still be under warranty, to try a replacement PS3 first and see how that goes. It could well be HDMI fault. If after that you get the same problems then it has to be the TV as you have ruled everything else out. Just because the TV is out of warranty it does not mean you do not have rights.

  113. nzer

after updating to 1.93, and leaving my machine to download a game from PSstore, I came back to find a blank screen. Turned it off, on to no avail. I was running HDMI-DVI (My TV has only a DVI-HDCP input). I did the beep-reset and used plain old composite, and everything worked (albeit horribly fuzzy). I went to the display menu, but choosing HDMI still leaves a blank screen.
My question, have the new 1.9 firmwares (I was previously on a v old one) changed anything re: HDCP? My ps3 worked fine for months on my setup. Do cables just break suddenly? Or am I screwed?
    Please help

  114. beck

Hello Nzer, Cables can find fault by themselves but I think it is rare. Because you have just done the firmware update, its more likely linked to that.

Your best bet at the moment is to call Sony support and see what they say. Explain fully what happened and tell them it happened straight after the firmware upgrade. They might be able to help.

  115. Hakeem

    Hey Beck,
It seems your the guru around here so ill leave you with this problem.

Yesterday i was able to connect my HDMI to my DVI with the aid of a HDMI-DVI adaptor running at 1080i on the XMB screena and 720p in games.
But today it is a different story, ive tried to connect but i get a blank screen, when i switch to the DVI screen it shows its running at 480p and it shows some crazy screen ‘as though its tuning, searching for channels to store.’

I phoned Sony and they reccomended that i change my HDMI cable, well that did not work.
I still got the same screen.

Is there anything i can do at all?
Ive tried the Default setting magic trick and trying to set through HDMI from there but i’m getting nothing.

I also have two tv’s of the same model and they are both getting the same thing.

    Cheers

  116. Hakeem

By the way i imported the PS3 its a JAP one … would Sony still repair if it needs to be repaired
As it will still be under warranty.

  117. beck

HI Hakeem, I am certainly no guru, but theres a couple of things you can try based on other people’s experiences here.

    1) If your TV has component output, try that instead because the difference is minimal if any at all.

    2) Try connecting with the standard AV cable, doing the reset to reset display then go into the display settings and change it to hdmi output. then shutdown. Make sure you power right down including the rocker switch. then switch cables and see if you can get that to work.

BTW as far as I know, Sony will fix the imported PS3 but because it does not have a European warranty they will charge you for the fix.

  118. Hakeem

    Cheers Becks but no luck
Seems my PS3 is probably busted

  119. Hakeem

More bad luck seems Sony won’t repair it

  120. beck

Don’t give up hope Hakeem there is bound to be an answer to fix it. What connections have you got on your TV?

  121. Hakeem

Well i just bought the HD-AV comp cable displays 720p and 1080i fine BUT, the colours are appualing

Ive got all the connections except HDMI itself Beck
but i have DVI to replace that

  122. beck

Hmm if the colours are bad then its more likely your TV is wrong. Have you tried adjusting the colours for your component video mode on the TV?

I think you ought to forget about HDMI, its obviously not working for you with the DVI thing and if the truth be known, its no better than component.

So your next step is to tweak your TV until you get the colours you want. If you TV is worth its salt, changing the colours for component will not affect the colours when watching TV on another av input.

  123. drei

Is this HDMI problem can only be found on launch-date systems and not on the recent systems? I’m planning on getting one for Christmas.

  124. beck

Hi Drei, I don’t think this is a PS3 problem as such, its more like issues with HDMI itself. I have the same issues with HDMI on my sky box.

Personally I just don’t think HDMI is mature enough as a worldwide standard, which is why you see some TVs having no problems and others having quite severe problems.

If you can use component then you won’t have any issues at all.

  125. Alex

Hi, I’ve been reading through your HDMI squabbles but still can’t see one the same as mine…when i use the HDMI cable with my ps3 the picture is too large for the screen, i’ve messed around with all the dashboard setting but with no luck! Also, if i then try and go back to a scart connection i get no picture at all!!! HELP!!

  126. beck

Hello Alex, I cannot be sure but this sounds to me like you have the resolution set too high on HDMI. In the display settings, what do you have ticked? If you have 1080p ticked, untick it.
In fact untick everything except for 480p/576p and 720p and see it that fixes it.

  127. mark

I first played my PS3 at my girlfriends house through HDMI cable now im back at home without a HD TV and the screen is completely blank? I think its because the PS3 is still set to HDMI. Not with girlfriend no more so I can’t use her TV to change it back! Can anyone help by telling me how many times i press left right x etc to change it back to compent. Thanks

  128. beck

    Hello Mark,

From standby, press and hold the power button for about 5 seconds until it beeps. Let go and the PS3 will start up in basic mode. From there you can setup your component and audio.

  129. Dylan

After reading thousands of these threads I finally found a fix for the “black screen” problem (I was getting a synced image from my PS3 but it was all black. I needed to redo the HDCP handshake between my SP4805 InFocus projector and my PS3. To do so I unplugged my projector from the wall completely for maybe 15 seconds, plugged it back in, reset the PS3’s display setting with only HDMI (and the power) connected and VIOLA! I thought I was out of luck, but it was the HDCP denying any image to pass to my projector via HDMI. This may just be an issue with projectors, maybe even infocus projectors, but I don’t see why this couldn’t work with TVs! It’s worth a try!

  130. Dean

    hi beck,

Benn looking and tried many of the tips on here. I have a just got my ps3 and tried connecting it through the hdmi. I get no picture what so ever it detects the hdmi but just stays blank even after asjusting the dispaly settings and doing the 5 second power trick still dont work. Anything else to try? I have a Samsung 42″ which was made in aug 06.

  131. Dean

No sound is coming out either

  132. beck

Hello Dean, try this one. Try connecting up using the standard AV cable that came with it. Then when in the dashboard change the display settings to HDMI. Then power down, change cable and switch back on again.

  133. Dean

just tried it. No joy the screen just goes black then returns. On hdmi if i push right i dont even get choice to change resolution

  134. beck

What are your options when you try and select HDMI ??

  135. Dean

nothing i select it then it says will go blank for 30 seconds and return

  136. beck

You should be able to select it and accept the changes then go on to set the resolutions.

  137. Dean

every other output type has that option but for some reason the hdmi don’t. Its very frustrating

  138. dean

No tried again and again. go to display settings, then go to HDM, press X screen goes blank for 30 seconds and returns. There is nothing on the HDMI channel and no additional settings are available once i press X

  139. beck

Hmm the only thing I can think of if you have tried the other stuff is maybe you are setting too high a resolution. Perhaps if your PS3 is set to 1080p but maybe you screen does not support it.

I don’t know what else to suggest other than trying another cable, or trying another cable type, like component.

  140. Gaz

I have just bought an X-Rocker audio chair to go with my PS3 but am having problems with the sound. It is fine if I connect PS3 to TV via AV cable but I get no sound from it if I connect PS3 to TV via HDMI. Does anybody have any ideas how to resolve this issue?

  141. beck

Hi Gaz, Having never seen an x-rocker chair I can only imagine what you are talking about and that is a gaming chair with speakers or something like that.

Check the audio connections of the chair, if the chair has an optical socket then thats the way to go. Plug in optical cable from PS3 to chair along with HDMI from PS3 to TV. Then go into your display/audio settings and select optical cable for your audio.

  142. Gaz

    Hi Beck,

Thanks for speedy response, unfortunately the chair only has standard audio input/output jacks. Is there a way of selecting HDMI out for video but standard AV/RCA for audio on PS3?

  143. Gaz

Maybe I am better off buying a component cable and wiring audio component of it through the chair?

  144. beck

    Hi Gaz,

You might be better off with component as that will have the correct red/white bits on it although the split in the cable may not be long enough to fit between PS3 and TV and PS3 and chair.

What you may be able to do (although not 100% sure if possible) is to have HDMI from PS3 to TV and then component (using audio bits only) from PS3 to Chair speakers. I reckon that might do it. Either way you do it with or without HDMI, you would need the component.

  145. Jonathan White

i connect a dvi-hdmi cable between my ps3 and my tv, all i get is a blank screen on the dvi channel. I tried changing the settings but i still have the problem, been running it off the old red yellow and white cables ever since.

Any advice, is it maybe a faulty cable?

  146. beck

HI Jonathan, I am sorry I really do not know much about DVI connections, in fact I have never seen one before in my life. lol

Does your TV have any other connections you could use to test it out? Like component for example? Even if you have component and are using them for something else you can buy component switch boxes to switch between sets.

  147. Jonathan White

yes i’m running the ps3 off the component (red, yellow, white) cables at the moment which works fine but i was hoping to run it off the hdmi port through to my ‘hd ready’ tv which doesn’t have a hdmi socket (but it does have a dvi port)

  148. Jonathan White

i have read on other forums that a hdmi-dvi cable works ok on a ps3 but so far ive had no success

  149. beck

Well to be totally honest with you, there is barely any difference between component and HDMI in terms of quality anyway. In fact going through a DVI converter cable may actually reduce quality, I don’t know. Unless you absolutely must use HDMI to free up a component socket, you might be better off sticking with what you have.

Having said that, if others on forums say its possible, then it is possible you have a faulty cable or its just a setting you are missing.

I highly recommend http://www.avforums.com for help on this issue. Like I say I have no idea about DVI so I would hate to lead you down the wrong route and give wrong information. Please let me know if you get a fix though.

  150. Gaz

Jonathan, the cable you are describing is the standard Av/RCA cable that comes with PS£ in UK. Component cable is different - has 5 cables that plug into back of TV (not all TVs have component sockets at back) abd does offer better quality than standard AV/RCA.

  151. beck

Ah blimey, well spotted Gaz. I didn’t even think of that.

Yes Jonathan, Gaz is absolutely right, component has red, white, red, blue and green - 5 cable ends.

What you describe is the standard horrible audio/video cable which is never going to give you HD.

Component has red, green and blue for video and red and white for audio.

  152. Primal Scientist

You can get an adapter with HDIMI to DVI connection.

  153. Jonathan White

So basically the component cables will give me better picture than the standard ps3 cable?

I was playing the new Pro Evo this morning and didn’t think it was playing that smooth - could that be due to the low quality red yellow white cables?

  154. beck

The red/yellow/white are called “composite”, often confused with component.

With composite you will never get high definition on an HDTV. The quality is very poor.

Go out to your local game shop and pick up a component cable for the PS3. Trust me, you will notice the difference immediately, the quality is amazing.

IMPORTANT NOTE - When changing cables you must do the reset trick as mentioned many times in this thread. Switch off, change cable, hold down power button for 5 seconds or so until it beeps then it should start up in basic mode where you can then set the display options again.

Obviously make sure your TV has component sockets on the back before buying. Look for socket holes with the following colours - red, blue and green, then red and white.

  155. Primal Scientist

I bought “Monster” Component Cables, cost me 70 or 80 quid, but looking back now - it was worth it.

The picture and sound quality are first class.

Had a bit of a nightmare going from HDMI to Component, but thanks to this site, I managed resolve my problem.

  156. Primal Scientist

Coming away from PS3 problems, has anyone EVER linked an external hard drive to an Xbox 360 for storage purposes? Can it be done?

  157. Simon Contini

I’ve not had any problems with the IXOS HDMI cables I bought from XtendedPlay here in the UK.

  158. Walter

I tried hooking up my PS3 with the same component cable I was using with my PS2. I noticed that the blue signal is not present. I got the same result on 2 different HDTVs. When I hook up with HDMI, everything is OK.
Unfortunately, the TV I want to use the PS3 with does not have HDMI.
Any thoughts? My understanding is that a PS2 component cable should work with PS3 as well.

  159. beck

I have not tried a PS2 component cable on the PS3. I did not know they were interchangeable.

Check that the blue is plugged in correctly. On the other hand, they may not be interchangeable in which case you would have to buy a PS3 one.

  160. Walter

If I swap out the PS3 and replace with PS2, picture is fine, so I know the cable is ok.
Maybe it isn’t compatible, but I’ve read many posts on different sites saying it is compatible. I’ve seen some ppl complaining in various posts about the PS3 video display appearing to have a “green tint” under various conditions. This is what happens when you lose the blue signal on component. Perhaps there is something going on in respect to the component signal.
I guess I’ll get a new “PS3″ cable and try it out.

  161. Jonathan White

Thanks everyone, I bought a ps3 component cable in the end and the picture is so much sharper than the old AV cable.

  162. beck

HI Jonathan, Glad you got it sorted. Going from standard to HD cable does make a huge difference.

Just be sure you selected the 720p or 1080i resolution otherwise that hd is wasted :)

Had similar problem to original post at the very top of this thread. Most of the issues are simply resolved by buying the most expensive HDMI cable you can afford. I bought a cable retailing at €15… worst thing i ever did!! Went and replaced the cable with a new 4mod cable and have had No! issues since. I truely never cut corners on quality, and in this case i did…when i spent €50 it worked fine.

    hi everyone
I just about to buy a new 40gb model. What resolutions can i watch blu-ray using component? can i watch it in 576p? I realise this is not HD but will it work?

  165. beck

Hello Ben, Yes you can watch films using 576p. They won’t look great but they won’t be unwatchable and will still run. I assume you have not got an HDTV?

PS3 supports 576p (basic), 720p, 1080i and 1080p. Choose the resolutions that your television supports. If its not an HDTV then settle with only 576p.

Just as an aside, are you aware that with the 40Gb model you will not be able to play old PS2 games on it? Also there are much better deals for the 60Gb version around at the moment. I think Blockbuster were doing PS3 + 4 games for only £349 or something like that.

  166. ben

Thanks beck, yes i have an older lg lafinion crt tv that can handle 480/576i/576p.(no hdmi)(
I just want to confirm those resolutions are supported ova COMPONENT?
Yes i am aware the 40gb model doesnt play the ps2 games , that doesnt bother me, i have a ps2 ;)That deal u mention sounds really good but as im downunder in oz & blockbuster only rents movies , thats a slight issue.
    I really appreciate ur help.
P.s re firmware updates- im guessing it will cum up 2 date. if it doesnt how do i update via usb,cd/dvd? & is there 1 firmware that has all the updates so far or do i have to update each 1 individually?

  167. beck

Sorry I was wrong in assuming you were from the UK.

As far as I know, firmware updates can be downloaded from the PS3 website and burned to CD. Also the updates will come via games. For example, apparently the new 1.94 firmware is bundled with Ratchet and Clank in the US, so I assume that will be in other territories aswell.

Alternatively, if you connect your PS3 to the internet via ethernet cable or wireless, then the day the new firmware comes out you will be prompted to download the new firmware when you switch on the machine. Its all pretty seamless. It will say new firmware available and then you click download. It will do the rest for you.

there seems to be a bit of a debate about whether the ps3 can upscale dvds over component, maybe you can shead some light. Thanks again pal.

  169. beck

HI Ben, I am sorry I have no idea about upscaling normal DVDs. According to that site though, you can upscale via HDMI, not component.

hey there, just wondering if anyone can help me with a similar problem.i bought an hdmi cable and plugged it straight ito the hdmi port on my tv,this worked fine for about 5 weeks then one day i turned on my ps3 and my tv wouldn’t play on the hdmi channel, the tv said searching then it would go fuzzy and just kept repeating this.ive tried everything including holding down the reset button so it would go back to default settings then changing from the xmb but doesn’t work…i also got the hdmi cable replaced and the new one worked for about 2 days then the same thing happenend, its driving me crazy…HELP!

  171. beck

    Hi Ross,

I am not sure about this issue. If you have tried a second cable and the same thing happens then obviously either your TV has a fault or the PS3.

The best way to check which it is to ask a friend who has an HDTV with HDMI to test the PS3 on their TV. If you have no friends with an HDTV then its possible you could get it tested at a local Game or Gamestation if (a) you bought it from there and (b) they have an HDTV to test it on.

I don’t know where you are in the world, but if you are in the UK and near Bucks, then I don’t mind testing it for you, but that is a very long shot.

I just bought a PS3 - ran the updates when I got it home. I get a snowy apparence.. I bought a phillips hdmi cable same problem. I plugged it into another tv and it looks perfect with the same cable.

I am wondering if it is my HDMI input on the tv, since I have not used it for anything else yet or if it is the combination of the PS3 with my model tv

    Hello Matt,

It certainly sounds like a problem with your TV. Have you got anything else which may take an HDMI connection like a sky HD box or something else? Or perhaps you have a friend that may have one. If you can test another type of equipment you can work out whether its the TV or the PS3/TV combo.

  175. ryan

I have just bought a ps3 and a phillips hdmi cable. However whenever i go to play a game or blue ray disc the colors of the item i am trying to play are all messed up. Its liek it cant get the shading textures right…dont know what to do and i want to play my ps 3 in HD. by the way i have a sharp aquos 42 in

  176. beck

    Hello Ryan,

Firstly I would suggest you check the cables are plugged in tight and then power down and reset the display settings.

Power right down including the rocker switch at the back. Switch the rocker on, then hold the standby/on button on for a few seconds until it beeps. It should start up in basic display mode and then set your HDMI settings again. You would probably want to select only the basic one of 480p/576p and more importantly 720p, select also 1080p if your TV supports it.

If it still occurs after that, you might want to then check your cable. Buy a cheap one or get one from a friend and see if the same happens. After that if you are still getting the problem, then its time to look at a bigger fault with the TV or the PS3

  177. Gary

Can’t see anyone with an identical problem as my own, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Basically, got my PS3 off my brother who’s been using it with a HDMI cable with no problems. I get home plug it in to my bog standard telly using the lead with the three pins (AV lead I think, the ) and I’m not getting any picture or sound.

I’ve tried reseting the ps3 by holding the power button down for 5 seconds until the beep but it does nothing. and I’ve tried using the same AV cable that comes with PS2 but it doesn’t help.

Know anything about this, or, can you point me in the right direction?

    Much appreciated.

  178. beck

Hello Gary, its clear to me your PS3 needs its display settings reset to allow you to use the basic cable.

If the reset trick is not working, try pressing down the button for longer until it boots itself instead of just until it beeps. That may work.

  179. Gary

Thank you Beck, I’ll try it.

I’ve heard that this might work:

its on this website under ps3 tab there should be a support tab. Try this. turn off ps3 . turn the switch on the back to off . then turn it on in the back then hold the power on switch till you hear i believe 2 beeps

IS that essentially what you are saying?

  180. beck

Yes when you heard the first beep, that might have just been the switch on beep. Hold it down for longer than you would normally switch it on. It should with any luck start up in basic mode.

  181. brickhouse

I am having trouble using an HDMI cable with my ps3. I had the ps3 hooked up with component cables and I would get “1080p resolution” on my TV display when I started up the ps3. Now that I am using HDMI the best I can get is 1080i. I tried checking 1080p and unchecking 1080i in the HDMI section of video output settings and it won’t give me a picture. When I let it set up automatic on HDMI it gives 1080i as the best resolution. When I let it set up automatic on Component/d-termminal it gives 1080p as the best resolution. Whats up with that? I thought HDMI was the ultimate?
    Thanks.

  182. beck

Hello Brickhouse, its really just marketing bullshit which tries to make people believe HDMI is the ultimate connection. Yes it is digital as opposed to the analogue of VGA and component and of course there are less cables, but really that is as far as it goes. There is barely a visible difference between the 3 connections each person will just have a favourite based on what their eyes prefer.

Have you tried to reset the entire display settings by holding down the standby button? Also its worth trying another cable. Of course make sure that your TV does actually support 1080p and it was that which component was displaying.

  183. yourmajesty

    Hey dudes n dudettes,

I’ve been reading up on all the posts, it sounds as if I’m just another guy with hdmi cable problems. Bought the cable, plugged ‘er in and I get the black screen. I’m going to check in on the soft boot settings when I get home for my lunch hour. Should the system recognize my attempt -through- the black screen? If it doesn’t I guess it’s dial-a-sony time? Or maybe I should try setting it on 1080i with the component cable in? Any advice would be helpful, I would hate to think this $5000 tv just refuses to recognize ps3 hdmi

  184. beck

    Hello Your Majesty, :)

Try the display reset trick first by holding down the standby button from off until it beeps and starts up. This should start the ps3 in basic mode where you should be able to set it again.

Failing that, use component to start up and see if you can then go into the display settings to change it to HDMI in there. After that, switch off and restart with HDMI cable plugged in.

Be sure to post back your results. Good luck.

  185. yourmajesty

Yahtzee! Did the soft reset and the thing picked it up right away. Looks beautiful too, I was worried there’d only be a negligible difference, but it’s pretty wicked looking. Thanks for the quick reply beck, happy new year everybody

  186. beck

Glad you got it sorted. Happy new year to you too!!

  187. yourmajesty

So, ok. As it turns out, the games are only playing in 720p. The ps3 turns on and begins in 1080i, but once the game is actually loaded, it automatically switches to 720p. Any ideas?

  188. beck

That is absolutely normal as games are made in 720p on the whole.

To avoid the switching you might want to untick 1080i in the options and have only the basic one and 720p

  189. yourmajesty

Aah I read ya. Thanks for the info brother, take ‘er easy

Hi this is the only site i’ve found which may help me, I’ve recently 1day ago go a hannspree 32″ lcd tv and connected it up to the ps3 with HDMI and selected 720p. It flashes to the blue screen and you hear the tv changing inputs or whatever happens and goes back to the game - when your playing the game you get random times when the blue screen appears and then goes. I dunno what to do - i dont want to have to buy a component cable just because theres issues with the hdmi ps3-tv. Where do i stand here - and what do i do? it just happens randomly!

  192. beck

    HI Jas,

It sounds like you may have a faulty HDMI cable there. Perhaps try another one in the first instance?

  193. Jas

Hi beck, but if it turns out its not the HDMI its gonna be a waste of money?
Is this a normal sign of a fault HDMI cable?

    this is what happens
    1)Tv on normally
    2)select any game
    3)PS3 logo appears
4)Blue Flash - HDMI logo on bottom right hand corner with 720p displayed and then continues to the game loading.

Its number 4 which i get randomly during game play for about 5 seconds. Could this be the TV?

  194. beck

    Hello Jas,

1-4 are all normal, but getting the 4 randomly during games is not normal and to me it seems like a faulty cable as it is losing its signal.
